Based on a systematic analysis of official documents, speeches by Chinese and US statesmen, and publications by leading American scholars, Russia’s open aggression against Ukraine has opened a “Pandora’s box” on frozen conflicts inherited from the Cold War.One of the most conflicting among them is the “Taiwan problem” due to the involvement of such global players as the United States and China, and its geographical location in the Asia Pacific Region (APR), which is quite “saturated” with territorial problems: the Spratly Islands issue involves Vietnam, China, the Philippines, Malaysia, Taiwan and Brunei; the Kuril Islands issue – different approaches of Japan and Russia to the belonging of the southern islands of the Kuril ridge – Iturup, Kunashir, Shikotan and Habomai. And now there is a tendency for the countries involved in territorial conflicts to state more clearly their position on the affiliation of the disputed territories or to prove their ability to resolve the conflict by force.Particular attention is paid to the current state of the “Taiwan problem” and the impact on its evolution of the Russian-Ukrainian war. The study found that Russian aggression against Ukraine is a destabilizing factor in the system of international relations at both the global and regional levels. Internationalized territorial conflicts have received an additional source of power in the context of destabilizing the cornerstones of international law.At the same time, open armed confrontation between the United States and China to resolve the “Taiwan problem” now seems unlikely. The sharp political statements of the leaders of both China and the United States are an illustration for both their citizens and their allies that situation under control and ready to take all necessary means to achieve their long-term national interests.
